Stump Grinding Ballarat
Stump work across Ballarat, from narrow-access machines for tight Sebastopol and Redan yards through to larger tracked grinders for rural blocks out toward Buninyong.
A leftover stump is more of a problem than most people expect. The decaying wood holds moisture, creates a habitat for termites and fungal pathogens, pushes up suckers from old roots, and as those roots dry out and shrink over the years they can shift nearby concrete or brickwork. In Ballarat we carry two machines: a narrow walk-behind unit that fits through a standard side gate for compact Sebastopol and Redan yards, and a larger self-propelled tracked machine for properties out toward Buninyong, Mount Helen and the wider rural fringe.
Price is set by three variables: the stump's diameter at ground level, the wood species, and the target depth below the surface. Most Ballarat customers want 200 to 300mm under, which suits a fresh lawn, standard pavers or a shallow bed. Laying a footing, building over the area, or planting a new tree in the same spot needs the job to go deeper — 400 to 500mm, sometimes more if the root structure demands it.
After grinding you're left with a loose mixture of wood fibre, fine chips and disturbed clay in the hole. That blend compresses and settles as it decomposes over the following season. For any surface finish that needs to hold level — turf, paving, a garden path — remove the chip fill and replace it with screened topsoil. We can do that on the day as an extra, or you can fill it yourself. The stump is gone either way.

Stump Grinding FAQs
How deep does the grinder go?
Standard is 200 to 300mm below the surface — enough for turf, garden beds or laying paving sand. For a footing, a concrete slab or replanting a tree in the same spot we go to 400 to 500mm, sometimes deeper if the species and root structure allow. Tell us what you're doing next and we'll set the right depth.
Will the machine fit through a narrow Ballarat side gate?
If the gate is 900mm clear or wider, yes. That covers nearly every older property across Sebastopol, Redan, Wendouree and Alfredton. For anything narrower, or a stump inside a courtyard, we assess it on the quote visit and work out whether a smaller tool or an alternative access route is the answer.
What's left when you're finished?
A mix of fine wood chips, root fibre and disturbed soil, roughly level with the ground around it. That fill will drop as the wood decomposes, so for a lawn or paving job it's better to remove the chip and replace with screened topsoil. For a garden bed you can leave the fill in, mix in some compost, and let it settle a season before planting anything you value.
Can several stumps be done in one visit?
Yes, and it works out cheaper per stump because the travel and setup cost is shared across the job. Worth grouping them if you've got a few from old removals, or a row of old poplars along the back fence. Send through how many and rough diameters and we'll quote the whole lot in one price.
