Mulching & Wood Chipping Ballarat
Chipping and mulch supply across Ballarat — branches put through the machine on your property, or bulk garden mulch delivered by the cubic metre for landscaping and garden maintenance.
People come to us for two different things. The first is a pile of branches from their own weekend cutting that's sitting on the lawn and needs to go. The second is a landscaping job that needs several cubic metres of mulch put down before winter planting starts. The chipper solves the first problem and the tipper solves the second — and if the timing lines up, both can happen on the same visit.
For on-site chipping, the machine comes to your property. Anything up to around 200mm in diameter goes straight through: weekend prunings, branches off a storm, cuttings from a hedge trim or the offcuts from work we've just completed. The result is a chip pile that stays on your block or gets loaded back onto the truck depending on what you want. Either way it is faster and cheaper than multiple tip trailer runs.
For mulch delivery, the main lines are hardwood chip fresh from tree work — good for laying thick on paths and around established plantings where you want long-lasting weed suppression — and aged composted mulch that has broken down enough to go directly onto garden beds and around new plantings without locking up soil nitrogen. Ballarat winters are hard on organic material, so a generous autumn layer is worth it for protecting root zones through the frost. Order by the cubic metre, delivered to the driveway. Adding a spreading service to the quote means the crew rakes it out before leaving.

Mulching & Wood Chipping FAQs
What's the maximum branch size the chipper takes?
Up to about 200mm in diameter clean through, which handles most prunings and storm material. Anything thicker gets cut into shorter sections first, then the smaller pieces go through the machine. Very large trunk wood gets cut into rounds and either left for firewood or listed as a separate haulage line if you want it removed.
What's the difference between fresh chip and aged mulch?
Fresh chip comes straight off the chipper after a removal, mostly hardwood, holds moisture and suppresses weeds well. It works best on paths and around established trees. Aged mulch has sat in a heap for months and broken down, it's softer, darker and gentle enough for garden beds and new plantings where fresh chip would temporarily tie up nitrogen in the soil as it breaks down.
How much mulch do I need?
For a 75 to 100mm layer over a garden bed, one cubic metre covers roughly 10 to 13 square metres. Measure the bed length times width to get square metres, then divide by about 11 for a rough cubic-metre figure. Ring through the dimensions and we'll work it out so you don't end up with excess.
Can the mulch be delivered and spread in Ballarat?
Yes to both. The default is a tipper drop at the driveway. If you'd prefer the crew to spread it across the beds before leaving, add the spreading line to the quote and we'll rake it out on the day. Works well for larger beds or if you'd rather not wheelbarrow a full load yourself.
